Responsibilities

The Software Engineering Group Manager will supervise all members of Hydroid’s Software Engineering Team which will include recruiting, hiring, training, mentoring, delegating projects, performance management and disciplining.  She/He will also provide guidance and direction relative to the software engineering discipline, application of best practices, and effective utilization of HyPro processes. The successful candidate will:

  • Create a positive, energetic work and team environment
  • Encourage and develop direct reports so they advance in their technical expertise
  • Responsible for training, development and coaching of staff
  • Ensure that design choices and verification methodologies support product requirements and Hydroid HyPro product development processes are followed within program timelines
  • Participate in and/or lead Peer Reviews, Design Reviews, and customer meetings as needed

  • Take pride in hands-on contribution and do not hesitate to participate as an individual contributor when needed
  • Support definition of staffing requirements, training requirements, and development of mentoring programs and career path opportunities for personnel within the department
  • Implement and/or perform disciplinary action, recommend staffing changes, and execute technical/functional performance reviews
  • Effectively foster a team environment
  • Exercise good judgment: ideal candidate will understand their own level of decision-making and also understand when it is important to advise/involve senior management into complex and high-risk situations
  • Demonstrate the ability to be creative and innovative and assist in developing unique, differentiated solutions to complex problems in a continuous improvement environment
  • Candidate should have a forward-looking perspective and constantly seek to learn from current activities to drive improvements for the future
  • Ability to develop direct reports as well as cultivate the strength of the team
  • Leverage others in the organization to complete their goals in this project based environment
  • Responsible for the development of design and documentation standards and practices
  • Responsible for hiring, training, and motivating personnel
  • Participate in the establishment of goals for members of the team
  • Counsel employees according to established policies and procedures and administer those that directly affect the team
  • Effectively delegate tasks and responsibilities as required

Qualifications

  • BS Degree in CS, CE, EE or a related field
  • Minimum of 5 years prior engineering and team leadership experience
  • 10+ years of experience in R&D Engineering
  • People-first leadership style with the ability to effectively coach, mentor and provide feedback to reports
  • Excellent C++ knowledge and experience
  • Experience with modern software engineering tools
  • Strong experience in software architecture design/development, full lifecycle software test/validation, and configuration management
  • Thorough understanding of engineering fundamentals
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills and collaborative work style
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, decompose complex technical problems, make design decisions and take appropriate action that leads to acceptable solutions
  • Experience with CMMI, ISO9001, and other quality systems strongly preferred
  • Experience developing software in a production environment preferred
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual should have strong knowledge of C++ and Microsoft Office Suite tools; Working knowledge of optimal control methods, ROS, Python, and Java are desired
  • Candidate should also have experience with embedded software development with a real-time operating system: VxWorks or equivalent as well as strong object oriented skills in C++
  • Experience with Visual Studio MFC experience is a plus
