    The Mechanical Engineering Group Manager will supervise all members of Hydroid’s Mechanical Engineering Team which with duties to include recruiting, hiring, training, mentoring, delegating projects, performance management and peer review.  She/He will also provide guidance, direction and priorities relative to the mechanical engineering discipline, application of best practices, and effective utilization of standard processes.


    • General hands on personnel and technical management of the Mechanical Engineering Group through assignments, reviews and evaluation.
    • Develop and maintain staffing plans including hiring activities to meet department and project team objectives.
    • Develop and maintain training, mentoring, career development and innovation programs.
    • Establish department and individual goals and administer performance evaluations.
    • Support proposal efforts through development and/or review of cost, schedule estimates and technical content.
    • Provide technical leadership through peer reviews, design reviews and customer meetings as needed.
    • Establish and maintain standard practices for Mechanical Engineering including design, analysis and configuration management.
    • Responsible for the development of design and documentation standards and practices
    • Identify, plan and execute strategic department initiatives and product improvement programs.
    • Maintain mechanical engineering related tools including SolidWorks CAD tools, FEA and data management.
    • Develop a Mechanical Engineering roadmap to provide a forward-looking plan for innovation including such as implementation of modern tools and design methods.
    • 5% at sea as required.
    • 5% business travel as required.
    • Other duties as assigned.



    • BS/MS Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
    • Minimum of 5 years prior engineering and team leadership experience.
    • 10+ years of engineering experience in R&D environment.
    • Proficiency with SolidWorks 3D modeling tools.
    • Experience with finite element analysis, methodology and modeling tools.
    • Experience with mechanical design for marine systems.
    • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, decompose complex technical problems, make design decisions and take appropriate action that leads to acceptable solutions.

    • Thorough understanding of engineering fundamentals.
    • The ideal candidate is an individual that can work in a fast-paced environment; with a high attention to detail, excellent problem-solving skills, ability to multi-task and enthusiastic attitude.


    Desired Qualifications:

    • Design and/or manufacturing Experience with autonomous vehicles or robotics.
    • Experience with CMMI, ISO9001, and other quality systems.
    • Experience with Defense acquisition policies, including DoD 5000 and related system engineering guidance.
    • Experience with configuration management in a DoD environment.
    • Experience with computational fluid dynamics analysis, methodology and modeling tools.
    • Experience with generation of work for ROM/Proposal, including basis of estimate and technical content.
    • Experience with Lean/Agile Development Methodologies (e.g., Kanban/SCRUM).
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite.


    A condition of this position will require the successful Applicant to pass a government security investigation and must subsequently receive authorization to access US Department of Defense Controlled Unclassified Information (“CUI”) and potentially classified information.
